Learn more about Boronized Tubing

BOR-1CR InstallationAs oil production becomes more challenging, operators are demanding creative solutions for reducing operating costs and increasing well productivity and uptime. BOR-1CR boronized tubing extends well string life by reducing the frequency of tubing failures. BOR-1CR boronized tubing enhances both the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of oil country tubular goods (OCTG). BOR-1CR boronized tubing was designed to extend tubing life in severe wear and corrosive environments. Borided tubing performs especially well in rod pumped wells where rod on tubing wear combined with corrosion leads to tubing string failures. By extending the life of tubing, expensive workovers can be performed less frequently which cuts annual operating costs along with increasing up time of each well.

Improved Resistance to Wear and Erosion

The boride layer that is diffused into the inner surface of tubing is extremely wear resistant having an average hardness of 1500 Vickers. ASTM G65 wear resistance testing shows that a borided tube will take nearly 20 times longer than an untreated tube to lose the same amount of wall thickness from abrasive wear.

Summary of ASTM G65 Abrasion Wear Test
Sample Starting weight (grams) Final weight (grams) Mass lost during test (grams) Average result (grams) Factor of Improvement
Untreated 1 186.900 184.433 2.467 2.303 19.5x less wear on borided specimens
Untreated 2 187.793 185.654 2.139
Borided 1 193.516 193.392 0.124 0.118
Borided 2 190.933 190.821 0.112
Improved Corrosion Resistance

BOR-1CR chartCorrosion can be just as detrimental to string life as wear issues. Tubes can fail from either rod wear or corrosion pitting in the field. The borided surface inside the internal bore has greater corrosion resistance than an untreated steel tube which yields additional resistance to internal corrosion pitting. Borided plain carbon steel tubing will only have 63% of the material lost to corrosion when compared to an untreated plain carbon steel tube when tested side by side in autoclave corrosion test chambers with simulated well conditions of high temperature, high pressure, CO2 and brine water.   This means that borided tubing will last 160% longer before failing due to corrosion.

By utilizing a premium seamless 1Cr steel substrate in our product, BOR-1CR borided tubing allows operators to benefit from having an external surface that better combats external corrosion in addition to providing even greater internal corrosion resistance beneath the boride layer.

No Loss of Bore Diameter Size, Not a Coating that can Peel or Flake Off

Rod pumped wellBoronizing is a thermochemical diffusion process where boron atoms are diffused into the inner bore surface of a steel tube. Inside the steel’s surface, boron reacts with iron to form a layer of hard, wear and corrosion resistant iron-boride compound. Because boron atoms diffuse into the steel, there is no loss of bore size and no buildup of material inside the tubing. Boronizing is not a coating and cannot peel off or separate from the tubing.

“When testing the product, we ask our customers to test them in sections of wells in which they expect rapid tubing failure,” says Jeff Hemmer, Chief Executive Officer, President and Chief Operating Officer of Bluewater Thermal Solutions, “We want to test and operate in extreme conditions to demonstrate the high performance and long life of our product.”
